High school hockey in southwest Austin

The problem today

Student-athletes in Lake Travis, Eanes, Dripping Springs, Austin ISD, and nearby areas who want hockey on ice often register through the Austin Metro Hockey Association (AMHA) and practice at sheets north of the river - Chaparral Ice, Ice & Field at The Crossover, and The Pond Hockey Club. That geography shapes what athletic directors, booster clubs, and families can responsibly endorse for after-school practice blocks, bus logistics, and multi-sport seasons.

High school clubs and varsity pathways

Hockey and figure skating club models at the high school level need accessible regulation ice for practices, scrimmages, and coach certification, not a 30–50 minute commute before puck drop. A southwest Austin facility is meant to shorten that distance and give schools a local partner for clubs, PE units, and adaptive skating without replacing programs families already trust.

We plan to coordinate with AMHA and established metro rinks so high school models align with age bands, sanctioning, and player development the association already runs - details on affiliation, ice blocks, and school-specific partnerships follow as financing and operations firm up.

What we are planning

We are planning high school–accessible ice blocks, club and varsity pathway support, and coordination with area instruction so student-athletes in the southwest submarket can train closer to campus. Dates, fees, roster rules, and UIL or club sanctioning are not published here yet - they depend on facility financing, operating partner selection, and conversations with schools and AMHA.
