City hall, partners, and momentum: an August recap

Bee Cave EDC and City Council meetings, refined twin sheet vision, developer and architect conversations, land exploration, and a strong AMHA coaches kickoff.

Milestone

On Tuesday, August 25, Shane Adams took Bee Cave Ice into the room where local decisions get made: the Bee Cave Economic Development Committee and Bee Cave City Council. It was a first introduction, not a pitch with a ribbon cutting date attached. Shane shared the vision, shook hands with EDC members, council colleagues, and the mayor, and left with something concrete. Follow up meetings are being scheduled to keep the conversation going.

A project like this only works when the city, the schools, the operators, and the families who will use the ice are all in the same conversation early.

Sharper picture of what we are building

The concept has come into clearer focus: two full size regulation rinks, a pro shop, dry land training space, and a full restaurant and bar. That is the kind of place where a Saturday morning learn to skate crowd, a high school team, and adults grabbing dinner after league night all feel at home. That twin sheet, community gathering place model is the through line on our Vision page, and these conversations are helping us stress test it against real sites and real partners.

Learning from people who have done this before

We have also sat down with developers who know this market from the inside:

  • The team behind Ice & Field at The Crossover in Cedar Park, a regional twin sheet reference point and a potential partner on how programs, ice time, and capital fit together.
  • The developer of Hill Country Indoor in Bee Cave, another lens on building a destination sports facility in this corridor.

And we met with JLG Architects, widely regarded as the leading hockey rink design firm in the country, to walk through configuration options and explore what a partnership could look like when we are ready to move from concept to drawings.

Land and location

Site work is exploratory, but the geography is not random. We are looking at private and city owned options in the triangle formed by Highway 620, Bee Cave Parkway, and Highway 71, close to where southwest Austin families already live, work, and drive. Every option still has to pencil on economics, access, and program fit. We will share more when there is something specific worth naming.

Schools

Outreach to area school districts is just beginning. If you are an ISD official or a parent advocate, the schools briefing hub is the right front door, including our deck and a path to request a conversation.

The hockey community is already here

Separate from the facility timeline but impossible to ignore: the Austin Metro Hockey Association coaches kickoff was held this past Saturday, and the turnout was remarkable. More than 75 coaches showed up across programs from 6U through high school hockey. Hockey here has a familial culture that other sports rarely match. Parents coach, siblings skate, and the same faces show up year after year. That depth of volunteer energy is exactly why local ice belongs in this corridor, not an hour away.

A Texas sized footnote

In broader news, the NHL continues to explore expansion, with Austin and Houston both in the conversation. Hockey economics are different from football: ticket sales drive a much larger share of league revenue for the NHL than they do for the NFL, which adds an interesting wrinkle when you compare metro sizes. Houston’s market is roughly three times Austin’s today. But anyone watching growth in Austin knows where the momentum is heading. And regardless of which city lands a franchise, a new NHL team in Texas lifts the entire state: more visibility, more kids lacing up skates, more reason to build ice where families already are.

We are still in an exploratory stage. Nothing on this page is a commitment to a site, a partner, or an opening date. But August felt like a step change: city leaders who know our name, advisors who build rinks for a living, land maps on the table, and a hockey community that is already showing up in force.
